Movie Possibilities?

I know this sounds crazy, but over at the Twilight Lexicon they posted that Twilight's director, Catherine Hardwick is going to possibly direct a movie based off a "buzzy" YA novel called If I Stay. They got their info from Entertainment Weekly...

From the site“Summit Entertainment is trying to make lightning strike twice. The studio behind the Twilight movie series has plans to adapt a buzzy young-adult novel called If I Stay with Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke at the helm…the parties are negotiating and a deal is not yet complete."

And the synopsis for the book: "Choices. Seventeen-year-old Mia is faced with some tough ones: Stay true to her first love— music—even if it means losing her boyfriend and leaving her family and friends behind? Then one February morning Mia goes for a drive with her family, and in an instant, everything changes. Suddenly, all the choices are gone, except one. And it’s the only one that matters."

Woah. The book hasn't even come out yet. But when it does I'm picking up a copy ASAP to see what's so amazing that the movie rights would be bought this early...geez.

Thoughts, anyone?

  1. Wow... I own this book. I wonder why it's being optioned so early too.

And does "buzzy" just mean that it's getting a lot of really good buzz pre-release? It just sounds odd to call a novel "buzzy"...

  2. I think it'd make a great film, and Catherine Hardwicke would be a good choice. I think the rights were bought a couple of months ago, but I could be wrong on that.

  5. Hardwicke does sound like a good choice. And yes, this book is predicted to be HUGE news. I must say, I definitely think it will win some book awards. The tone is lovely, though everything is heart-wrenching. It's one of the books I cried over, but it didn't leave me feeling depressed. I was actually kind of happy at the end even when I couldn't stop sobbing.

Then again, Viola of the NSCGs didn't cry at all, though she did like the book. So I guess it gets a variety of reactions.

  7. The book is amazing - I sobbed nearly the entire read and I have been accused of being a heartless wench.

The rights were bought on the 13th of January and came as a surprise to Gayle (who I have been in touch with). She's been hopeful but not optimistic. Now she's just gobsmacked. The book doesn't even come out until April.
